According to the American Association of Packaging and Recycling (AAPRC), about 70 percent of packaged food products are wasted in the United States.
A 2015 study by researchers at the University of Washington and the University at Albany found that in 2014, Americans used more than $2.3 billion worth of disposable packaging, with more than 30 percent of that going to packaging for beverages and more than 3 percent for packaged meat and poultry.
In 2016, the AAPRC estimated that a third of the plastic waste in the world was discarded.
And according to research from the University and the Institute for Food and Agriculture Policy (IFAP), there is enough waste in our food system that the world could lose about a billion pounds of plastic each year if all countries took action to reduce plastic waste.
So cutting down on our plastic consumption can reduce food and packaging waste, reduce food loss, and save the planet.
