The National Frozen Food Institute says it has found a way to prevent the death of refrigerators from the coronavirus.
The institute, which has helped more than 100 million people and businesses worldwide avoid the disease, has been working with the FDA to develop a freeze-resistant technology.
“It is important to recognize that the majority of these products are not in a perfect position to survive the coronavalc virus and have the ability to withstand it,” said Gary Rydstrom, director of NFFI’s consumer products division.
“But it’s important to understand that there are also a lot of refrigerated items that are still out there that will survive the virus and will be ready to deliver you the food you need for the long haul.”
The refrigerators that could survive the infection could include the ones in your freezer, the freezer-proof refrigerator, the fridge that can be used to freeze fruits and vegetables, the microwaveable refrigerator, and so on.
They could also include the products you would normally put into the refrigerator when it’s not being used.
The NFFII estimates that, based on the numbers, most of the refrigerators in the U.S. will be able to withstand the virus for at least a few months.
“As the global pandemic continues, it will continue to be a challenge to maintain refrigeration systems, as well as the products they use, at a level of security,” Rydram said.
“The best way to maintain the integrity of the product is to use a safe, non-coronavirus, nonhazardous process to remove contaminants from the food and beverages you purchase.”
The FDA says it is developing a freeze resistant technology that can detect contaminants and then remove them from the product, such as bacteria or mold, before it’s put into your freezer.
The technology could be rolled out to refrigerators within the next two to three years.
Ryds said the freeze resistant refrigerators would likely be sold as disposable, and that the products could also be reused.
“If you had a freezer full of food, you wouldn’t be able buy that food, so why should your refrigerator have to store that food?” he said.
The frozen products could be used by retailers or restaurants, as an alternative to using refrigerators and potentially saving money.
“There are a lot more things you could use it for than refrigerators,” Ridds said.
